First Terminal BASE jump in Italy at Monte Brento

First Terminal BASE jump at Monte Brento. This was the biggest goal that I had in my life. After standing on Half Dome in Yosemite years ago, I knew I had to jump of a cliff where I could freefall. It took years of sky sports to feel comfortable and competent to take on this terminal BASE jump. Special thanks to all my mentors over the years. Tips for High Wind Speedflying and Launching: What you don't know can hurt you

Speedflying in Hawaii has taught me some valuable lessons some were from my crashes some were from others. I always said some one should make a video of the basics, because I definitely could have used one. So here it is. The only thing I messed up is my Cobra Launch in the video is not a Cobra Launch. It is a Reverse Launch brought up to the side a little. If you are going to be dumb, be smart...

i fly hanggliders not paragliders but the concepts are largely similar. one thing thats important to remember when hovering/near hover or any other situations with high airspeed but negligible ground speed is the lack of momentum/inertia. While the wing is flying in airspeeds equivalent to what you would see out in free air the lack of momentum means that small drops in the wind can easily stall you and without that forward momentum you can lose orientation with respect to the wind super quick. ive seen a lot of people get yawed 30 or 40 degrees in a momentary loss of wind and then when the wind comes back half a second later they get shot downwind fast and have a hard time recovering. this makes that point in the approach where you still have a lot of altitude but very little ground speed quite dangerous and over time you should really try to minimize that portion of the approach imo

I respectfully disagree with what you are doing! Teaching speed riding online makes this sport even more accessible without proper training under a coach and makes it look way easier and less dangerous than it is. There are people out there that want to try this sport and are not willing to pay someone to coach them, especially when basic info is available online, thus putting themselves in danger and we know what that means. Usually these people do not listen well and a disclaimer will not prevent them from trying... Trying in this sport is trying not to die with no skill and no supervision... I just hope people will not die because of you opening the door for them into this sport. If you want to launch your school, there are other methods to do that, speed riding will not bring you a huge audience anyways, if that is what you are looking for. There are no schools doing what you do for a reason... please reconsider!

Thanks for this post, some good stuff here. I actually AM an instructor, and here is what we teach for really high winds. This technique prevents you from getting jerked backwards, or having to switch quickly from reverse to forward and losing your balance when you get pulled back. Always start with your wing upside down, it can't go anywhere if it's trying to fly into the ground. Pay special attention at :46 - (this isn't my video) ua-cam.com/video/iMtuZkBrRzc/v-deo.html

We also use the same upside-down inflation technique on skis, when you have too much wind for a forward, but you don't have the ability to maneuver with your feet. You start out facing sideways, with your wing upside-down, and again it won't go anywhere until you want it to. You can be completely relaxed, hands off the wing, get all prepped to go, do a safety check, then reach down to where your brakes are naturally positioned on top of the correct side, grab them and inflate one wing-tip. When pulling up one wing tip, you simply start skiing across the hill and pull the wing over your head. This also works in quite strong winds: ua-cam.com/video/ZFkY-ec-LqA/v-deo.html

I will never strap my ass to one of these but if i did it would be on the most windless day of the year and then the wing would just go plop on the ground like Charlie Brown's football and then I can tell everybody about the time I tried paragliding.

Cool but I gotta be that guy to say it was not worth the risk. A short jump (like the last guy was very close to) was death either by unconscious fall to ground or very late pull after orienting with same result.
